Saoirse Ronan to star in Disney's 'Seven'
RonanSaoirse Ronan is in final talks to star in Disney's "Order of Seven," a project that was originally developed as a Kung Fu retelling of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." The pic has since been reworked as a standalone action adventure that's cut all ties to the classic tale. The Mouse House first began developing the project a decade ago. Ronan would play Olivia Sinclair, a British expat in 19th century Hong Kong, who seeks the protection of a centuries old group of warriors, now a jaded group of outlaws. After the reemergence of an ancient evil empress, Sinclair helps the warriors reclaim their destiny and noble roots. Disney hopes to boost the international appeal of the pic by casting the roles of the warriors with well-known stars in China, Russia and Japan, creating a global team of heroes. Studio execs have been making trips to those territories to begin talks with local talent. Commercials helmer and visual effects supervisor Michael Gracey is set to make his directorial debut on the fantasy pic that Andrew Gunn is producing through his Disney- based Gunn Films banner ("Race to Witch Mountain," "Freaky Friday"). Production starts this fall. The latest version of the script was written by Jayson Rothwell and Michael DeBruyn. Project was originally penned by Michael Chabon, when it was set up as "Snow and the Seven" and incorporated more elements from "Snow White," including a murderous stepmother and magical mirror. Film has been in development at Disney since 2002. In 2005, "The Matrix" trilogy and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping was attached to direct. Since then, a number of directors have come and gone, including Francis Lawrence, along with scribes Michael Arndt ("Toy Story 3"). Natalie Portman had been circling the project when Lawrence was attached to direct. Move away from "Snow White" should be smart for the Mouse House given that Relativity's "Mirror Mirror" and Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman" are bowing this year. Ronan ("Hanna") is a voice in "The Secret World of Arriety," that Disney is distributing for Studio Ghibli; is attached to Neil Jordan's vampire pic "Byzantium;" and will star in Andrew Niccol's "The Host," based on "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer's novel. Selena Gomez Says The Sky Is Everywhere
She wants to star in the book adaptationDisney Channel starlet Selena Gomez is looking to get a little more proactive than some of her contemporaries when it comes to her career. She already has a production company in place and has just optioned the rights to Jandy Nelson's novel The Sky Is Everywhere. It's early days for the film, which doesn't yet have a writer or director attached or any studio backing as of yet, but if it comes together, Gomez wants to play Lennie Walker, an introverted 17-year-old band geek and bookworm who lives in the shadow of her much more popular and adventurous older sister, Bailey. But Bailey dies suddenly and Lennie is catapulted into a whole new life, and becomes torn between two boys, one her sister's grieving boyfriend (blimey, he doesn't hang about, does he?) and the other a sensitive French musician studying in Paris. And (whodathunkit?) she comes out of her shell and realises that she's actually quite attractive, even as her usually ordered world falls apart when she tries to juggle two relationships.Gomez was last seen in the strictly tweencentric Monte Carlo, a bad film in which she was fairly decent, and from the looks of Sky it won't exactly stretch her into very new territory. It does, however, look like she's aiming to take more risks, as she's also signed on for Harmony Korine's girls-rob-a-restaurant-to-fund-their-holiday crime pic Spring Breakers, which is lining up to shoot in, er, spring.

On Location: Jersey Shoreline Returns to Seaside Levels for Season 5
Jersey Shoreline It is a drizzly winter mid-day in Seaside Levels, and Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi - her recently slimmed-lower body put right into a skintight dress that barely covers her backside - sits in the bar, legs entered. Unlike the drunken, foulmouthed clown she appears to embody most of the time around the MTV reality hit Jersey Shoreline, Snooki is quiet, even modest, thanks simply to being underneath the weather. "I had been using up last evening," she states. Her fever is supported with a a sore throat and inflamed glands. But, she states, "I understand when you should switch on the switch." And switch it on she does, together with her seven other cast mates - Deena Cortese, "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio, Jenni "JWoww" Farley, Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola, Vinny Guadagnino, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Mike "The ProblemInch Sorrentino - scattered through the Beachcomber Bar and Grill within the town that released them into pop-culture infamy. The gang, who wrapped filming several weeks ago, has reunited in a favorite haunt in recognition of Season 5. (The premiere broadcast The month of january 5.) The atmosphere is completely celebratory, with a lot of smiles and hugs. "This," states JWoww, "is home." Coming "home" earlier this summer time would be a welcome change of pace in the two previous several weeks in Florence, Italia, in which the cast felt isolated and unnatural. "Once they [returned], I believe everybody licked the wood around the boardwalk," states professional producer SallyAnn Salsano. "It had been a large exhale." Not too it had been touring. To begin with, Vinny's mood dropped. He was homesick for Staten Island - Seasons 4 and 5 shot back-to-back - and temporarily left. "I desired a rest,Inch states Vinny. "Lots of drama was happening in Italia, so when you are completed with that, you need to go back home, have your mattress - no more drama." Losing the cast member who's perhaps probably the most levelheaded would be a blow towards the group, particularly given that they had no clue if he'd return - or perhaps be changed with a brand new roomie. "I was scared - we did not want other people in the home,Inch states Snooki. "Him departing was very strange. It felt like something didn't have within our family." Obviously, Vinny could not steer clear - after in regards to a week, he states, he came back to Seaside. "All I'm able to have to say is which i needed a rest, I left, and you've got to determine what goes on,Inch Vinny states. He wasn't the only person participating in high drama. Search for Deena to likely take part in (much more) girl-girl action. Pauly will attract another "stalker." Sammi and Ronnie, unlike tumultuous seasons past, relish their on-off courtship. "Our relationship was awesome," states Sammi. "It had been fun, it had been romantic - we'd a lot of fun together." (Following filming, the happy couple split again - both the decision was mutual.) JWoww and love Roger Mathews continue their love story, honoring the main one-year mark. Meanwhile, expect a lot of crackling tension between Mike and Snooki that started in Italia, where he says they smushed while she was dating her boyfriend Jionni. "Mike lied - he earned up stuff to interrupt me and Jionni up. I believe he wanted airtime or something like that," Snooki states. (For that record, Snooki states that whenever being split up "for, like, per week,Inch she and Jionni spent nearly every subsequent evening together in Seaside, and therefore are now shaping intends to marry "and also have, like, four kids.") Just how does Snooki deal with sleeping underneath the same roof because the enemy? "After I can't stand someone, I pretend they do not exist," she states. "That's what it is been. I do not need buddies like this during my existence." Not surprisingly, Mike is constantly on the stick to his version of occasions. "Only me and Snooki be aware of real truth," he states. That bottomless friction is familiar with this group, along with the year arrived, gossips are swirling that this may be curtains for Jersey Shoreline. Pauly D already has their own spin-off show, concentrating on his career like a DJ and slated to premiere at the end of spring. Snooki and JWoww have one that belongs to them that starts shooting this winter. And rankings for that mothership dropped this past year - Season 4 dipped from an 8.8 million high to six.six million audiences for that finale - raising the question: Has got the GTL gimmick started to put on thin for audiences? The cast, a minimum of, is showing no signs the finish is near. (MTV has choices on these for just one more season.) "I really hope [there's a Season 6] - I'd miss this place," states Pauly. "I love to be around every summer time." Seconds Salsano, "Basically been with them my way, I'd visit Seaside Levels every summer time until I die. As lengthy as people keep watching, I can not imagine everybody not going." Jersey Shoreline airs Thursdays at 10/9c on MTV. Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!

Wednesday TV in Review: Chelsea, Face Off, Middle, Harry and More
Face Off Knock knock. Who's there? Chelsea. Chelsea who? No, make that Chelsea why? The answer to the question posed in NBC's squalid new sitcom Are You There, Chelsea? (8:30/7:30c) is "not really." Based on late-night spitfire Chelsea Handler's potty-mouthed party-girl memoirs - but dropping the Vodka from the title because that might be, you know, offensive - this smutty but toothless misfire puzzlingly reduces Handler to a supporting role: that of a mousy, whiny born-again sister to the fictional Chelsea, played by That '70s Show's Laura Prepon with a one-note husky-voiced crassness that grows stale long before the first scene (in a women's jail cell) ends with Glee's Dot Marie Jones leering at Chelsea. Which is maybe the only sexual advance Chelsea spurns. As long as she can be on top. Which she mentions a lot. The smarmy and incessant innuendo is more deafening than the laugh track, and yet no matter how low it stoops, it still lacks the zing and bite of Handler's cable antics. In a calendar year of so-far-dreadful new network comedies that has included ABC's Work It and moves on to CBS' ineptly offensive Rob on Thursday, Chelsea has the distinction of being the one that should come with a shot of penicillin. The only upside: It's a good fit with the equally puerile Whitney, and by forming an easy-to-ignore block on Wednesday, frees up NBC's Thursday lineup for the return of 30 Rock (though at the expense of Community, sorry to say). Anyone with taste or self-regard will be watching ABC's Wednesday comedies anyway (more on that later), so if we're lucky, before long when we look for Chelsea on the schedule (though why would we?), it simply won't be there. Want more fall TV news? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! NOT JUST ANOTHER PRETTY FACE: The transformations on Syfy's fascinating competition show Face Off (10/9c) aren't your usual TV makeovers. Unless, I suppose, you always dreamed of being turned into a movie monster. This addictive series, returning for a second season, is like Work of Art using the body as a canvas for the most macabre extremes of imagination. Contestants are a funky group of artists skilled in special-effects make-up, creature creation and sculpture, body painting and the like. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, likewise the horrific and fantastic visions they execute in each challenge, as we watch the process unfold from design and sketches to sculpting and molds to application to final touch-ups. The opening round, introduced by the appealing host McKenzie Westmore, takes the players from the Universal Studios backlot (home of many a legendary monster) to Hollywood Boulevard, with the elimination "Spotlight" challenge involving the reinterpretation of a movie and literary classic: The Wizard of Oz. Namely, the scarecrow, tin man, cowardly lion and wicked witch. Icons of the highest order, and as they say on shows like American Idol, the goal is to make them their own. And they do, with decidedly mixed results - the tin man seems to really stump them - but scarecrows are notoriously scary objects, and in the hands of these craftspeople, they become something so fearsome in visage it would send Dorothy Gale back to Kansas in a heartbeat. Other big news for reality fans: Tonight is the "restaurant wars" episode of Bravo's Top Chef: Texas (10/9c). What are the odds meat will be on the menu? WHERE THE FUNNY IS: If it's Wednesday, it must be on ABC, kicking off with another inspired episode of The Middle (8/7c), in which we find the Hecks returning from the funeral of ancient Aunt Ginny - the episode is dedicated to Frances Bay, who passed away last September at 92 - with an extended scene of family banter in the car that ranks among the show's finest and funniest. When Frankie explains the concept of bereavement food, that "you're not supposed to cook" when you're sad, Brick pipes up, "Are you sad all the time, mom?" Score. Frankie really is sad, though, when she stops to think about how quickly time passes and how the family rarely stops to acknowledge the major milestones. One such milestone occurs later in the episode, as Poor Sue (Eden Sher) becomes aware she may have an admirer on the wrestling team. An actual boyfriend? Aunt Ginny would be so proud. Suburgatory (8:30/7:30c) welcomes Cougar Town's much-missed Dan Byrd, who's killing time like the rest of us until ABC finally schedules the blasted show already. He plays an undercover narc at school befriended by Tessa, who assumes he's gay - which still doesn't stop sad-sack Lisa from crushing on him. And Tessa's not the only one in her family jumping to conclusions, as George assumes Dallas' invitation to design her boutique is yet another form of seduction. (The way she eats a banana, who can blame him?) In the episodes not made available for preview, Modern Family (9/8c) puts Mitchell and Cam one step closer to their next adoption, as they meet with prospective birth mothers and try to keep their cool (good luck with that); and there's a guest-star alert on Happy Endings (9:31/8:31c), as Dave's dad (Michael McKean) shows up with his new girlfriend, who happens to be Penny's mom (Megan Mullally). GOING APE: "Why Wonder Woman?" That's the question posed on NBC's Harry's Law (9/8c) as an emotionally unstable client (Smallville's Erica Durance) is accused of barbaric vigilantism after she assaults abusive husbands while wearing the classic superhero drag. Why indeed. This qualifies as a classic in-joke, referring to Law creator David E. Kelley's failed attempt to revive Wonder Woman for NBC, one of the most notorious unaired pilots in years. (It truly is a sight to behold.) The episode's other subplot involves a high-functioning runaway zoo ape on whose behalf Harry (Kathy Bates) tries to argue the issue of "personhood." Hey, he's at least as believable as any of the ridiculous human animals on this show, with its cloying mix of the painfully earnest and the quirkily precious. The maudlin storytelling made me want to rebel like Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I'm more intrigued by tonight's scenario for NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10/9c), seemingly inspired by the interactive off-Broadway phenom Sleep No More (also featured recently on Gossip Girl). The crime du jour involves a rape that occurs mid-performance, with the audience (in masks) believing it's part of the show. Fisher Stevens guests as the play's director, who probably wasn't aiming for that level of realism. Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!
